NCDC experts advocate hygiene, early treatment

The Nigeria Centre for Illness Management and Prevention (NCDC) has raised considerations over a surge in Lassa fever instances nationwide, with Bauchi, Edo, and Ondo States recording increased numbers since November 2024.

The Director-Basic of NCDC, Jide Idris, mentioned this in an interview with the Information Company of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Monday.

Mr Idris mentioned the illness management company had issued a complete public advisory on Lassa fever, urging Nigerians to undertake preventive measures as instances proceed to rise through the peak transmission season.

He warned that the height dry season, which lasts till April, may exacerbate outbreak if preventive measures should not strictly adhered to.

NAN studies that Lassa fever, named after the city of Lassa in Borno, the place it was first recognized in 1969, is endemic in Nigeria, with outbreaks occurring nearly yearly.

The viral haemorrhagic illness is primarily transmitted by means of contact with meals or surfaces contaminated with excretions from contaminated rodents.
