An arms trafficker from Algeria has admitted to supplying weapons to bandits throughout Nigeria’s northwestern states for eight years.
The Zamfara Police Commissioner, Mohammed Dalijan, disclosed this throughout a briefing in Gusau on Tuesday.
He said that the suspect was arrested on the Illela border level, the place police recovered 4 AK-47 rifles, the Information Company of Nigeria experiences.
”The suspected Algerian advised the police he had been committing this crime for eight years,” Dalijan mentioned.
He revealed that the police had carried out raids over the previous three weeks, recovering 16 AK-47 rifles, one double-barrel gun, and a regionally made pistol from an arms producer based mostly in Jos, Plateau State.
“The command, performing on intelligence, traced and arrested an arms producer in Jos and tracked and arrested a regional arms trafficker from Algeria,” he mentioned.
Along with these arrests, Dalijan confirmed the detention of a number of suspects, together with bandits, motorbike suppliers, and unlawful gold miners.
“The police recovered dwell ammunition and N2.5 million money, amongst others, from the suspects,” he said.
He reiterated the federal and state governments’ ban on unlawful mining, warning that violators would face extreme penalties.
