The Federal Authorities has confirmed an outbreak of the Extremely Pathogenic Avian Influenza, popularly generally known as fowl flu, in Kano State.

The outbreak of the illness has raised issues over its potential unfold in Nigeria’s northern area.
A round by the Chief Veterinary Officer of Nigeria, Dr Columba Teru Vakuru, highlighted the heightened danger of transmission of the fowl flu illness.
“We urge all state veterinary workplaces and related companies to activate their surveillance methods instantly.
“Strict biosecurity measures have to be carried out, and public consciousness campaigns intensified to curb the unfold of the virus,” the round acknowledged.
Whereas revealing how the outbreak began, Chairman of the Poultry Affiliation of Nigeria, PAN, Kano State chapter, Dr Usman Gwarzo, recounted an incident from December 2024 that sounded the alarm.
“A younger man from Galadanchi quarters in Gwale Native Authorities Space bought a duck from Janguza market in Tofa LGA and launched it to his flock of hens and chickens.
“The duck out of the blue died, and shortly after, the chickens adopted,” Gwarzo defined.
The carcasses, in accordance with him, had been taken to the Gwale veterinary clinic, the place avian influenza was suspected.
“Samples had been despatched for testing, and by the primary week of January 2025, the outcomes confirmed the presence of the virus,” he added.
Gwarzo suggested Kano residents to stay vigilant and report any suspicious fowl deaths to veterinary authorities.
